Labor Day parades began in New York in 1882, and Oregon became the first state to make the day an official holiday in 1887. Congress declared it a national holiday in 1894 in the aftermath of the Pullman railway strike. The weekend is regarded as the unofficial end of summer, with barbecues, sales and the start of the school year and the football season.

Why is US Labor Day in September rather than May?
President Grover Cleveland is widely credited with favouring a September date, reportedly to distance the holiday from the international May Day movement after the Haymarket events. The first Monday in September became standard.
