About Father's Day
The modern Father's Day grew from a 1910 celebration in Spokane, Washington, promoted by Sonora Smart Dodd to honour her widowed father, who raised six children. Its popularity spread through the twentieth century, and the United States formally recognised it as a permanent annual observance in 1972. Today cards, handmade gifts, a family lunch or a walk together are typical ways of marking it.
When is Father's Day?
In the UK it is the third Sunday in June, but other countries differ: Australia holds it in September, Germany on Ascension Day, and Spain and Italy on 19 March.
