About German Unity Day in Germany
Before reunification, West Germany marked 17 June as the Day of German Unity, recalling the 1953 uprising in East Germany. After the two states joined in 1990, 3 October was chosen instead, partly because 9 November carries painful associations with Kristallnacht in 1938. A central citizens' festival moves each year to the state holding the presidency of the Bundesrat.
