About Sports Day in Japan
Sports Day began in 1966 to commemorate the opening of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics on 10 October, which symbolised Japan's postwar recovery. It was originally called Health and Sports Day and was renamed Sports Day in 2020. Schools and neighbourhoods often hold undokai, field days with relay races, tug of war and ball games, and many people take up an activity for the day.
